My Mother-in-Law Got a Hot Dog Outfit for My Oldest Daughter, While Her Real Granddaughters Wore Princess Costumes

My second husband ⁣treats my oldest daughter, Mabel, like she’s his own, and I never had to ask him to. But his mom, Brenda? That’s⁢ a whole other situation.

At first, I ignored Brenda’s favoritism. It wasn’t obvious; just small things here and there.

She’d say stuff like, “Tessa and Juno look just like Aaron,‌ don’t they?”‍ while completely ignoring Mabel. Or ⁢she’d give the younger girls gifts and somehow “forget” about Mabel.

But those little things piled up. The anger inside me grew slowly but surely until one day it was too much to handle.

The school ball was what pushed me over the edge. A simple event but super important for my girls. You’d think they were going to a fancy dance with how excited⁤ they were.

Mabel had been talking about it for ⁤weeks! She dreamed of twirling in a princess dress with her friends.

Then ‍my mom passed away suddenly during all the ball ‍planning; Aaron and⁣ I ⁤had to leave town for the funeral.

Leaving the girls with Brenda while we were gone seemed like the best choice at that moment. If it weren’t for the⁤ ball coming up, ⁤I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

I really didn’t want to trust Brenda with their dresses for the ball but what could I do? She sounded so sincere when she said she would take care of everything ⁤that ⁤I believed her completely!

I was foolish!

While at the funeral reception, my phone buzzed ⁣with a message from Brenda. After being overwhelmed by⁢ grief all⁣ day long, hearing about my girls’ preparations should’ve made ‍me feel better—how⁤ wrong I was!

When I opened ⁣her message, ⁣there were pictures of Tessa and Juno in beautiful sparkly princess dresses—exactly what we planned! But ⁤poor sweet Mabel? She was stuck wearing some silly foam hot dog costume!

And⁢ then came the caption: “Every princess ⁢needs a sidekick! Here’s ours!”

I couldn’t‍ believe it; my heart‌ sank into my stomach! A sidekick?! My ‌Mabel who ⁤wanted nothing more than to be a‌ princess ended up⁢ in something that mocked her instead!

My‌ sadness turned into an intense rage—I ⁣didn’t know such anger existed within me! Storming outside of reception hall ⁢,I called Brenda immediately.

“What is wrong with you?” I whispered angrily trying not to raise ⁤my voice too much. “Why is Mable dressed ‌as a hot dog?”

Brenda sounded confused ‍as ⁣if this wasn’t serious at all: “Judith calm down—it was ⁣just ⁣funny! Mabel didn’t mind.”

“A joke? She’s ten years old!” ‌

“She didn’t seem upset,”

“Did you even ask her?”

Aaron stood beside me now looking concerned as he listened in on our conversation before gesturing for me ⁢pass him phone which ⁤i did without hesitation .

“Mom what’s happening?” he asked gripping phone tightly ‍.“You promised you would handle this.”

On other end ,Brenda still defensive replied : “Aaron why is this such big deal ?Mable⁤ didn’t mind !”

He⁣ interrupted sharply : “You put her in costume meant be laughed at .This isn’t funny.”

“Well ,I thought it was amusing—”

Aaron lost ⁣patience ‍then .

“She’s⁣ just child Mom ⁢! Not your punchline .We’ll‍ discuss this face-to-face.”

With that he hung up turning towards me nodding before heading straight towards parking lot where i struggled‌ keep pace behind him‍ feeling anxious .

During drive home silence filled car ⁢except sound engine roaring loudly outside window .Once arrived at Brendas house Aaron slammed door shut rushing inside ‌without waiting .

Heart racing fast followed closely behind feeling sick inside stomach twisting knots tight around each breath⁣ taken .

In kitchen ‍stood brenda pouring herself tea casually unaware tension filling room until Aaron confronted her directly :

“How could do this ?” His voice boomed startling brenda causing teacup rattle hands ⁢nervously.”How could humiliate our daughter?”

Brenda turned around shocked expression plastered across face.”Aaron please calm down you’re overreacting!”

“Overreacting?” He shouted⁣ back incredulously,”Do understand how embarrassing this‌ must’ve been?”

Without waiting anymore,I slipped past them quietly making way living room where girls sat together looking worried glances exchanged between them both

“Mabel honey,” whispered gently brushing hair aside,”We’re going home now okay?”

When finally got back home spoke softly comforting words shattered heart seeing tears streaming down cheeks as shared experience from night before unfolded slowly⁤ revealing pain felt ⁣deeply within soul itself:

“All other kids wore pretty dresses asking why ‍wasn’t wearing one.” Her voice trembled looking down ashamed twisting hands together‌ nervously.”Didn’t know answer so laughed along…but ‌felt stupid.”

Kneeling close enough see eyes clearly gazing back ‌into mine⁢ reassuringly said,”Sweetheart, you are NOT stupid. You’re ‌amazing, strong & beautiful girl.I’m sorry went ‌through that.”

Aaron squeezed ‍hand tightly guilt etched ⁤across features promising,”We’ll fix everything,Mabel.I swear!”

But ⁣fixing things proved impossible instead only worsened situation ⁤further⁣ complicating matters entirely…
