Jerry and Marcia Savage: A Love Story Cut Short by Tragedy
Their enduring love was tragically interrupted by Hurricane Helene, which devastated the Southeastern United States.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, recognized as the deadliest storm to strike the continental U.S. since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, heart-wrenching accounts of loss are surfacing from affected areas.
Among those who lost their lives are Jerry Savage, 78, and his wife Marcia Savage, 74, a cherished couple from Beech Island, South Carolina.
The catastrophic storm has resulted in at least 231 fatalities across six states. The heartbreaking demise of Jerry and Marcia highlights the severe consequences of this disaster. A tree fell onto their home during the storm, crushing the bedroom where they had created countless memories together.
Coroner Had to Separate Them
Emergency responders confirmed their deaths upon reaching the tragic scene.
“My father was on top of my mother holding her close as if trying to shield her,” shared their daughter Tammy Estep, 54. She added poignantly: “The coroner had to separate them.”
Jerry and Marcia first met as teenagers and quickly fell in love. They celebrated over five decades of marriage while being actively involved in their local Baptist church. Their bond was unique—they were both born on January 22nd but just a few years apart.
Since 1975, they had made their home in a cozy one-story house filled with memories.
Tammy reflected on her parents’ relationship as an inspiring example: “Their connection was immediate and everlasting.”
“The Night That Changed Everything”
Their grandson John Savage was present that fateful night and recounted some devastating details about what transpired.
At around 4 a.m., John entered his grandparents’ room to check on them; he found them shaken but unharmed along with their small dog named Angel.
However, within an hour chaos ensued when they heard “the loudest crash imaginable” as a tree collapsed onto their home. John attempted to reach his grandparents but found himself blocked by debris. It would take time before he learned about the tragic outcome.
“When they removed them from there,” John told ABC4News tearfully, “my grandpa must have heard that tree snap beforehand because he rolled over trying to protect my grandma.” He added: “They loved each other until their last moments.”
Sadly enough, even Angel—the family’s two-year-old Chow Chow mix—was also discovered lifeless beside them in bed.
