Len Goodman, a beloved figure in the world of dance and television, passed away at the age of 78. Goodman, who was well-known as a judge on the popular TV show “Dancing With the Stars,” died on a Saturday in a hospice located in Kent, southern England. For some time, he had been battling bone cancer. His death was confirmed by his manager, Jackie Gill, who mentioned that Len was surrounded by family members in his final moments.
Born in London in 1944, Len Goodman started his journey into the world of dance at the age of 19. Despite beginning relatively late, he quickly made a name for himself as a professional dancer. His talent and passion for dance led him to become one of the most respected figures in the industry.
Len Goodman gained widespread recognition when he became the head judge on the British TV show “Strictly Come Dancing,” which is the original version of “Dancing With the Stars.” He was a part of “Strictly Come Dancing” from its inception in 2004 until 2016, when he stepped down. His role as the head judge made him a household name in the UK and brought him into the hearts of millions of viewers. After he left the show, Shirley Ballas took over his position, but Len’s presence was deeply missed by fans of the show.
Len’s contribution to “Dancing With the Stars” extended beyond the UK. He also served as a judge on the American version of the show, joining the panel alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. He judged on the show from 2005 to 2018, where his expertise, wit, and warm personality made him a favorite among the contestants and viewers alike.
Tributes poured in after news of Len Goodman’s passing. BBC director-general Tim Davie described him as a “wonderful, warm entertainer who was loved by millions.” Davie went on to say that Len had a unique ability to connect with people of all ages, making everyone feel like they were a part of his extended family. He was credited as a significant factor behind the success of “Strictly Come Dancing,” and his absence will be deeply felt by the public, his friends, and his family.
Bruno Tonioli, Len’s longtime colleague and fellow judge on “Dancing With the Stars,” shared a touching tribute on social media. He posted a picture of the two of them holding hands, expressing his heartbreak over the loss of his dear friend. Bruno wrote, “Heartbroken, my dear friend and partner for 19 years, the one and only ballroom LEGEND, Len Goodman, passed away. I will treasure the memories of our adventures… There will never be anyone like you. You will always be my perfect 10.”
Outside of his television career, Len Goodman was also dedicated to teaching dance. He ran the Goodman Dance Academy in Kent, where he shared his knowledge and passion for dance with many students. In addition to his work in dance and television, Len authored an autobiography titled “Better Late Than Never: From Barrow Boy to Ballroom,” which was published in 2009. He also wrote “Dancing Around Britain” and “Lost London,” sharing his experiences and memories from his incredible life.
His legacy as a dancer, judge, and beloved television personality will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.
