Barbra’s experience of becoming a mother seemed to have brought a fresh perspective on her own childhood. She opened up about the deep emotional impact of losing her father at only 15 months old, describing it as a significant void in her life.

In her memoir, “My Name Is Barbra,” the actress also described her complicated relationship with her mother, who was emotionally reserved.

“I was angry that I didn’t have a father,” Barbra recalled, adding that her mother avoided talking about him, fearing it would only intensify her grief.

When Barbra questioned her parent’s lack of affection, her mother explained, “My parents never hugged me … but I knew they loved me,” to which the singer responded, “Well, I didn’t know you loved me.”

In addition to the painful revelations about her family, Barbra also reflected on her journey into motherhood. At 21, she married her first husband, actor Elliot Gould, in 1963, and not long after, they encountered an unexpected surprise.

Barbra recalled her reaction to discovering she was pregnant, describing it as a shock. She admitted, “For years I had honestly thought there was something wrong with me, because I had never gotten pregnant. Having a baby seemed like something for other women, not for me.”

The celebrity recounted a passionate evening with Elliot during rehearsals in London, noting how an intense mix of emotions led to a moment of vulnerability.

“And that’s when it happened … I could feel the moment when I conceived,” she stated. Filled with joy, she described how pregnancy made her feel “normal for once,” an experience that brought her immense happiness.

Barbra and Elliot welcomed their son, Jason Gould, in December 1966. However, their marriage ended after eight years. Despite the separation, Barbra and Jason formed a close bond, sharing a mutual love for music.

He later reflected on his early musical inclinations, sharing, “As a child, I was always a kid who would sit at the keyboard and come up with little melodies, but I never knew how to develop them into a full-fledged song.”

Jason admitted that he only began attempting to write lyrics several years ago but felt that music had always been “a part of me.” Like his mother, he ventured into acting and singing, embracing the artistic path that had defined Barbra’s own career.

Though Jason initially resisted music due to his mother’s fame, he eventually accepted it, surprising Barbra with his singing talent in 2012.

“I was very afraid of exploring that part of myself,” he admitted in an interview. He only shared his first recording, “How Deep Is the Ocean,” with her years later.

Since then, he’s released a debut EP, an album titled “Dangerous Man,” another EP, “Dark Grey Skies,” and several singles, including his latest release.

Despite his musical success, Jason has never sought fame, admitting, “I sort of like being out of the spotlight.” Open about his sexuality since the ’80s, the songwriter recalled the aftermath after he came out as a gay man.

He once saw a tabloid cover falsely claiming he had married a male model and called the story “shocking because it’s so untrue.” However, Jason clarified that he was never uncomfortable with being identified as gay. “I never felt like I needed to come out because I never felt like I was in,” he shared, expressing comfort in his own identity.
